His Purpose or Yours?

I call to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.
Psalms 57:2 CSB

Purpose is defined as the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists. It’s something we spend our lives seeking.

God has a purpose for you and He wants to fulfill that purpose. He created us to seek out and live for His purpose in our lives. However, we can’t seek His purpose and the purpose we have for ourselves. It’s one or the other. Seeking out our own purposes leaves us unfulfilled.

There are a lot of admirable things from a humanistic worldly perspective that we chase after as our purpose for this life. But those can lead us away from God’s purpose for our lives. We can chase happiness, ambitions, relationships, college degrees, careers, status, white picket fences all leading us further away from God’s purpose.  We can even chase things like ministry for our own selfish reasons. It’s so important to seek God in all things. Only He knows His purpose for us, left on our own we will stray.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; in all your ways know him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Our understanding, our reasoning, our thoughts of what our purpose for this life could be are not reliable. We must acknowledge God in ALL our ways and allow Him to establish His purpose in our lives.

Think of Jesus, who in anguish before going to the cross prayed to God, not my will but your will. This should also be our prayer!

Going a little farther, he fell facedown and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” Matthew 26:39

As believers, surrendering to God also includes surrendering our purpose to Him. Setting every expectation that we have for our careers, marriages, children, relationships, everything on Him.  Accepting His purpose for our lives, no matter what it looks like. In Christ we no longer live for ourselves but seek to do everything, including living this life, to and for the glory of God. He is our purpose.

But seek first the kingdom of God  and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. Matthew 6:33

Anyone who finds his life will lose it, and anyone who loses his life because of me will find it. Matthew 10:39

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:31
